Guest Post by Yuval Malinsky, CEO of Vigorous Mind: Leading Israeli Life Sciences Companies Are Coming to Boston this November
Like Massachusetts, Israel is a major hub for innovation in the life sciences with a strong ecosystem of world-class academic and research institutions, leading medical centers, and a highly educated and innovative workforce. Supportive government incentives and top notch VCs complement the ecosystem.
A major focus of Israeli research and innovation has occurred in the life sciences. There are more than 750 Israeli life sciences companies with more than 200 already generating revenue. Of those 750 companies, more than 130 are biotech companies and 76 are pharma companies. Of the biotech and pharma companies, 52 companies are in clinical trials with 61 molecules: 23 in Phase I, 30 in Phase II and 8 in Phase III.
This November, the New England-Israel Business Council is hosting the 2012 NEIBC Life Sciences Summit to bring together leading Israeli Life Sciences companies and researchers with the New England life sciences community for an opportunity to discuss mutual challenges and share opportunities for collaboration in R&D, marketing, and investment.
The 2010 NEIBC Life Sciences Summit was attended by more than 320 local members of the life sciences community and 50 Israeli visitors and had many significant outcomes. The Summit led to high level of awareness by the MA Government, MLSC, MassBio, and MassMEDIC as to the Israeli life sciences industry and a strong desire to explore and expand collaborations. Some of the attendees joined Governor Patrick’s Economic 2011 Trade Mission to Israel which included a life sciences tract organized by the NEIBC. MassMedic, an organization which represents over 600 medical device companies including Phillips Healthcare, Covidien, and Boston Scientific, formed the MassMedic Israel Interest Group to develop ways to work more closely with the Israeli Industry.
This year’s Summit is being held November 5-6, 2012, and we expect it to draw more than 400 attendees. With more than 30 industry leaders already confirmed as speakers the program promises to be phenomenal. It is certainly the most significant Israeli-centric event of its kind.
