MassBioEd Job Shadow Day is a Success
On June 7th, 500 Massachusetts students participated in MassBioEd‘s 3rd Annual Statewide Biotechnology Job Shadow Day. They toured the Commonwealth’s most cutting-edge labs, asked questions of the state’s brilliant scientific minds, and networked with potential future employers.
Students from 15 different high schools visited 14 companies throughout Massachusetts. By giving high school students the opportunity to experience firsthand the daily life of a life sciences professional, MassBioEd hopes to deepen their awareness of the critical contributions being made by biotechnology firms in treating symptoms and curing diseases, ultimately steering them towards futures in the life sciences.
While each company had its own unique agenda, each student met a mentor they were able to witness in action while having the ability to ask questions and build new relationships. Read the rest of this entry

BioTeach Lab Wins 2011 NIH K-12 LAB Challenge Award
We are pleased to announce that the Burping Yeast lab, designed by four BioTeach teachers, has received recognition from the NIH K-12 LAB Challenge Award!
The NIH K–12 LAB Challenge is a call to the nation to help bring engaging hands-on science into the classroom — so everyone can enjoy doing science! NIH asked people to send in their best experiments for kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms. These written procedures are available to everyone for free.
During Summer 2010, the MassBioEd team asked a small group of teachers to design labs that used BioTeach equipment, were engaging and original, aligned with state frameworks, and were virtually free to run. The Burping Yeast Lab is available here.
